Common Furnace Problems in Cold Weather
We rely on our furnace to keep us cozy in cold temperatures. Like any other other appliance, furnaces sometimes malfunction. How uncomfortable! You’ll want to recognize and repair furnace problems as quickly as possible. The following are the most common furnace problems that occur during cold weather and suggestions for troubleshooting.
Your Furnace is Blowing Only Cold Air
If your furnace is blowing cold air:
- Check your thermostat to ensure it’s set on heat rather than circulate.
- Check your pilot light.
- It may be a problem with your filter. Filters collect allergens, dust, dirt, and dander. Dirty or blocked filters impede airflow, increasing the time it takes to heat your home and inflating your energy bill. Change your filter once every 3 months to maintain air quality, prevent clogging and damage, and ensure your furnace works efficiently.
- Look for air duct issues. Check to see if your ducts need sealing or better insulation.
- You may have trouble with your furnace blower. Contact an HVAC technician for help.
You Have Uneven Airflow
Uneven airflow is a common furnace problem in cold weather. If the heat in your home is inconsistent (some rooms hot and some rooms cold), your air ducts may be blocked or need resealing. Your vents may need to be adjusted, or you may have the wrong HVAC system for the size of your house.
Your Furnace Won’t Turn On
If your furnace won’t turn on, check your thermostat to ensure it’s on heat, and check the fan to ensure it’s set on auto. Make sure that the circuit breaker is on. You may have a motor issue if your heating system still does not start. In this case, contact an HVAC specialist.
Your Furnace Continuously Turns Off And On
If your furnace is constantly cycling, you may have your thermostat in a location with rapid heat loss (the back or front entry). Relocating your thermostat may solve the problem.
Your Furnace Is Making a Banging Or Grinding Noise
Banging and grinding noises are caused by friction between moving parts, ball-bearing issues, or loose components. These problems require immediate service or repair by a trained technician.
Your Furnace Makes A High-Pitched Squeak
A high-pitched squeak suggests an issue with the blower belt (fraying or breaking). Call an HVAC expert immediately.
Water Is Leaking From Your Furnace
A clogged drain line or a leaky condenser may cause water to leak through your furnace base.
A High Energy Bill
Dirty burners lead to incomplete combustion, increasing emissions and reducing efficiency. Regularly clean dust and debris from the burners.
