Getting Your Heater Ready for Winter in 10 Steps

Colder weather is upon us. We begin to crave cozy spaces, hot drinks, and sedentary activities. It’s the perfect time to get your heater ready for winter. The following are some tips for preparing your heating system for the winter season to ensure efficiency and safety and to keep you warm and toasty!

Steps To Get Your Heater Ready For Winter

  1. Check your thermostat: Change the thermostat to the heat setting. Slowly raise the temperature setting while listening for the heat to turn on. If the heat does not begin, remove the cover and check the connections, ensuring they are secure. Verify that the power source is on.
  2. Change the filters: Filters collect dander, dust, allergens, and dirt. Change your HVAC filter once every three months, summer and winter, to prevent clogging and damage, maintain air quality, and ensure your heater works efficiently.
  3. Examine the heat exchanger:  Look for fissures and cracks. If you find any, call an HVAC specialist to assist with repairs. To prolong the life of your system and ensure it operates efficiently, vacuum the heat exchanger to remove dirt, dust, cobwebs, and debris.
  4. Cover the condenser: Now that the AC is off, cover your condenser with an air conditioner cover, ensuring no debris can enter. Alternately, cover it with wood or a trash can lid and secure it with bungee cords.
  5. Examine the vents: Clean, dust, and open the vents/registers so warm air can freely circulate in your home. Remove blankets, toys, or furniture that obstructs floor vents.
  6. Inspect the ignition switch: If the ignition switch does not work, check the breaker and reset the switch. If this does not help, call an HVAC technician for assistance.
  7. Clean the burners: Debris and dust collect in the burners of a heater. Remove the burner cover and vacuum the base and burners using the wand or upholstery attachment. While cleaning, keep an eye out for misalignment or rust.
  8. Oil the blower: The blower is a critical component of the HVAC system, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness. Apply three or four drops of 10-weight motor oil (non-detergent style – not all-purpose). Be careful not to over-lubricate. If your blower shaft has an oil port(s), lubricate them too.
  9. Check the carbon monoxide detector: Replace the batteries and perform a test.
  10. Call an HVAC professional: If these steps feel complicated, or if time is an issue to complete them, call an HVAC professional. They have the knowledge, skill, and equipment to inspect, service, and repair your system.
