The Difference Between DIY and Professional HVAC Installers

In these uncertain times, we are all searching for ways to save money. This has led many people to get creative at home. Baking bread, knitting, and even learning how to cut their own hair. While finding new and interesting hobbies to save money and fill your time, know that there are some tasks that should always be left to the professionals.

Heating & Cooling Systems

The HVAC in your home is a complex system made up of several components. The main pieces being your heater, air conditioner, and ductwork. To work effectively, these units utilize electricity and natural gas. At best, mistakes can break down your system. At worst, they can cause electrocution, fire, gas leaks, or even carbon monoxide poisoning. With that in mind, changing your filter, cleaning the outside unit, and dusting off the floor vents are all tasks you can perform easily yourself. Anything more than that, like maintenance or repairs, should be done by a certified HVAC technician.

HVAC Technician Training

In Arizona, HVAC technicians must either undergo an intensive training program or work as an apprentice under a journeyman technician. This experience will introduce them to the physics of HVAC systems, electrical considerations, and more. They will learn how to install ductwork in a variety of different applications. Residential homes, apartment buildings, commercial offices, and industrial plants will all have different needs. This training takes four years to complete before a person can obtain an HVAC license and become a journeyman.

Homeowner Considerations

Beyond the vast expanse of specialized knowledge that HVAC technicians have, there are other reasons why homeowners should avoid DIY repairs. As mentioned before, we are all trying to keep our spending low. DIY repairs often result in expensive disasters, and oftentimes you’ll need to call in the professionals anyway to fix them! Furthermore, HVAC technicians can perform repairs with respect to your unit’s warranty. That way, if anything does go wrong, you’re covered if you’re still within that warranty period. In fact, most technicians offer their own warranties or guarantees on the work they’ve performed. That’s something a random YouTube video could definitely not do!

HVAC systems are the lungs of your home. Don’t risk dangerous setbacks by attempting your own DIY repairs. Instead, invest in professionals who are specially trained for the task. If you have questions about your HVAC system and live in Morristown, Wittman, or even Circle City, call our team of experts today!
