HVAC Technology Trends in 2025

Approximately 50% of the world’s energy use and 40% of carbon emissions are due to cooling and heating. Innovative technology and energy efficiency are increasingly important. The HVAC industry is rising to the occasion with the integration of smart technology, energy-efficient systems, renewable energy, environmentally friendly refrigerants, and more.

HVAC Technology Trends

The following are some of the HVAC technology trends of 2025.

  • Integration of renewable energy: To lower energy costs and reduce reliance on emission-producing sources (such as gas, oil, and coal), the HVAC industry integrates wind and solar power, thereby cutting costs and reducing reliance on the grid. Geothermal HVAC systems that harness the earth’s heat (utilizing underground pipes to transfer heat from the earth) are more affordable and easier to install than ever before.
  • Eco-friendly refrigerants: Commonly used refrigerants (R22, R-410A) have a global warming potential of 100 years, which is approximately two thousand times that of CO₂. The HVAC industry is in the process of moving toward the use of refrigerants with a lower environmental impact (R32 and R-454B).
  • Increased use of smart technology/IoT connectivity: When smart components are added to an HVAC system, energy use is optimized. These systems use algorithms and data to adjust cooling and heating as needed, lowering energy usage and costs. Temperature can be based on room occupancy, allowing empty spaces to be less heated/cooled. Settings are adjusted from any location, and peak-time usage is reduced.
  • Improved air quality: The growing number of wildfires and the smoke they create has increased our awareness of the importance of indoor air quality. The HVAC industry is utilizing IAQ technology, such as smart sensors for ventilation/filtration, ultraviolet light disinfection, bipolar ionization, and advanced filtration systems (HEPA filters, multi-stage filters).
  • AI/machine learning: HVAC systems utilize AI/machine learning for predictive maintenance, energy efficiency, and optimal performance. Real-time data enables optimization of maintenance scheduling and predicts potential problems/issues. This technology increases the lifespan of the HVAC system, optimizes efficiency, and reduces the number of unexpected failures.
